I was hoping we could create a discussion in this thread about dermal graft scarring. I know I got a nasty one across my lower back from my nightmare with Dr. Rheinschild 6 years ago. It's funny, because prior to the procedure, this was a concern of mine but he convinced me to go through with it by using words and phrases such as "hairline scar", "I'll make it so you can't even see it", and my personal favorite "thin, white, undetectible line". Yeah, right. What I ended up with in red, jagged, and seriously looks like he cut my back open with a chainsaw and stapled it back together. Dan Salas, who has seen thousands of dermal scars, told me mine was definitely one of the 2 or 3 worst he'd ever seen, if not the overall worst.
So, I am meeting with a plastic surgeon next week to discuss my options and to find out how much improvement could be expected. I will definitely share what I learn with the forum here. I was just wondering if anyone else here had done anything to correct their dermal scars. If so, what did you do and how effective was it?
And I'll ask people not to recommend over the counter products for this. If you saw my scar, you'd know that it would be absurd to think that something like that would be strong enough to work.

8ball I, like yourself, have scarring from my dermal graft...The scarring is on the inside of my ass cheeks...The scarring is not so bad, but it still is noticeable. I've always intended to have this taken care of... Anyway, this thread is a good starting point!

I swear that on his website he stated he would take the dermal grafts from the horizontal gluteal crease so that it would be a hardly visible. I looked up lasers and scars, but all I found was lasers to remove mild acne scars. Perhaps the scars might require removal by a plastic surgeon. I feel bad for you; you're young, got your manhood messed up, and the scarring on your back. Just know you are in great company here and I am sure some guys will be able to give you some helpful suggestions. I saw this plastic surgeon's website: faceandfigure.com/he seems to do some great work, although I couldn't find anything about scar reduction/removal. But he might be able to help since many of his after pictures are quite impressive and he is on the east coast. Just a thought...

sheldon, Thanks for the info. That guy in your link looks good, but I'm definitely looking to have this done locally. He's like a 9-10 hour drive from where I'm at. Regarding Lasers, there are some that are used primarily on redness, and they seem to be pretty effective from the research I've done. I do have redness, so they would improve my condition, but I really want to be left with a scar that is thinner and not uneven. I am probably looking at having the scar cut out and reclosed by a surgeon who knows what they are doing and not some 70-something year old kook like Rheinschild who couldn't even take my pre op measurements without his hand shaking. Then, after it heals, I could probably improve the appearance by having said laser work done on the scar, if I am still not happy. I have a little experience with this, as I had some Laser treatments done to improve some acne and mild acne scarring years ago (hurts like hell but is probably much more painful on the face where I had it done than the lower back). The V Beam Laser seems to be the one most commonly used on scars to reduce redness. But, this is all my own conclusions, I'll be happy to hear what the plastic surgeon recommends.

Hi 8Ball,
I had a couple of surgeries in the late 90's by Dr. Rheinschild. I was left with some nasty scars too..
Dr. Tim Marten, a plastic surgeon in San Francisco did my surgery to repair the scars. I am very happy with the improvement. He did some fat transfer to the area as well to improve the shape and fill out the contour of my butt where the grafts came from.

Hey rouguetrader, I'm glad to hear that your reconstructive surgery helped you a lot, that gives me hope. Can you go into detail about what exactly your surgeon did to fix the scar? Did he actually cut out the scar tissue and reclose the incision? I don't think the fat transfer would benefit me as it's mainly just the skin itself that looks bad because there is a 1 inch wide scar. It sounds like yours was from the gleuteal crease whereas mine is from the lower back.

Hey 8ball,
I don't know exactly what all he did to them, but yes he did recut them, removed scar tissue and re-approximated the edges more precisely. They were not really red or hypertrophic at the time of the repair so that was not an issue. I had forgotten what a pain in the ass it is, literally, while these thing heal. The poke holes where he put the fat in were really tender. I couldn't sleep on my side for a couple weeks. Now at about eight months post, the sites are a smooth reddish brown shade maybe 1/4" wide. They feel like the surrounding skin; I can't tell where they are by feel. And I could before. I used scaraway strips at months 2-5 post revision. I don't know how much good they did though.

Hey 8ball I know where you are coming from. Dr. R gave me a huge ridiculous scar on my back where he took the dermal graphs.
Sometime in the future I would like to have it taken care of, but that's after I have another reconstruction surgery...
It's good to know there might be hope for us.
